چکیده

Peer-to-peer file sharing applications have become enormously popular over the past few years, coming to represent a large fraction of wide-area Internet traffic. A side effect of this explosive growth has been an emerging tussle between users, who want fast downloads, and ISPs, whose flat-rate pricing business model is threatened by the extreme volume of P2P traffic. Because ISP costs scale with usage while their prices do not, many ISPs have attempted to throttle or shut down P2P systems. Recently, several researchers have proposed that this tussle is unnecessary, that small changes in client and/or protocol behavior can lead to a “win-win" solution of better performance for end-users with less wide-area traffic for ISPs. Using a very large scale trace measurement of BitTorrent usage, we find evidence that such a win-win outcome is unlikely for at least one very popular P2P protocol.

ISP-friendly P2P live streaming

Current peer-to-peer systems are network-agnostic, often generating large volumes of unnecessary inter-ISP traffic. Although recent work has shown the benefits of ISP-awareness on bulk transfer applications, no studies have focused on optimizing P2P live streaming systems. These are harder to design, as data must be diffused to all receivers within short delays. We have designed a novel scheme ...

Reducing Cross-ISP Traffic of P2P Systems: TheEnd or The Beginning of P2P Traffic Control

As Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are widely deployed in the Internet, P2P traffic control becomes a challenge for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and P2P system vendors. Some recent works consider the interaction between ISPs and P2P systems and propose ISP-friendly P2P traffic control mechanisms for reducing cross-ISP traffic. In this paper, we consider another fundamental problem: the interact...

Towards an ISP-Compliant, Peer-Friendly Design for Peer-to-Peer Networks

Peer-to-peer (P2P) applications are consuming a significant fraction of the total bandwidth of Internet service providers (ISPs). This has become a financial burden to ISPs and if not well addressed may lead ISPs to block or put strict rate limits on P2P traffic. In this paper, we propose a new framework, PCP, for designing P2P applications to smoothly fit into the global Internet. In our frame...

PreeN: Improving Steady-State Performance of ISP-Friendly P2P Applications

Much effort has been put into making P2P applications ISPfriendly, i.e. finding a solution that reduces inter-ISP traffic while maintaining the high file-sharing efficiency of existing P2P applications. Related works have analyzed different ISP-friendly P2P solutions by simulations. However, most of these simulation models have two common assumptions; 1) the peer arrival process follows a flash...

Towards Effective Control of P2P Traffic Aggregates in Network Infrastructures

Nowadays, many P2P applications proliferate in the Internet. The attractiveness of many of these systems relies on the collaborative approach used to exchange large resources without the dependence and associated constraints of centralized approaches where a single server is responsible to handle all the requests from the clients. As consequence, some P2P systems are also interesting and cost-e...
